CAN QURAN BE A WORD OF GOD?

quran word of god

Author – Aryavir

The Scholars of Islam claim Quran to be a word of GOD (Allah) and they bring forward some verses from Quran to support their claims. In this Short article, we will analyze one such claim and will prove that Quran is not a word of God in just three simple steps. The English translation of Quranic verses has been taken from reliable and authentic Islamic sources like www.quran.com and anybody who feels that the English translation of Quran is not correct  should actually question these Islamic sources from where the translation has been taken.

STEP NO 1:

It is written in Quran Chapter 4 – Surat An-Nisā’ (The Women) verse 82 which says –

Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah , they would have found within it much contradiction.

So here in this verse there is a very strong claim given by the Author of Quran that if it had been from anybody other than God (Allah) then we would have found  many contradictory statements in Quran and no Muslim can refuse this statement in fact they very proudly mention this verse of Quran and challenge Non Muslims to prove one single contradiction in Quran. So if we find a single contradiction in Quran then it cannot be called as a word of God.

STEP NO 2:

Now let us have at look on some other verse of Quran-

Chapter 6(Surah Al-anam) verse 114 says-

[Say], “Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge while it is He who has revealed to you the Book explained in detail?” And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so never be among the doubters.

Chapter 68 (Surah Al Qalam) verse 37 –

Or do you have a scripture (other than Quran) in which you learn

Chapter 77 ( Surah Al-Mursalat ) verse 50 –

Then in what statement after the Qur’an will they believe?

So as per these verse Quran is a book which has explained things in detail so neither you should doubt the authenticity of Quran and nor you should follow any other book other than Quran because according to these verses Quran is a complete book and the best discourse and no Muslim can disagree with this statement.

STEP NO 3 –

Now in the first two steps we have studied that Quran claims itself to be a book from God and states that there are no contradictions and it is book which is itself complete and has been explained in detail now we will analyze a four well known practices of Islam and we will see whether they are explained in detail or not and whether they contradict the verse 114 of chapter 6.  Here are the four well known practices in the light of Quran-

a). FIVE TIME NAMAZ (PRAYER ) –

Salat (prayer) is one of the most important pillars of Islam and it is compulsory for a muslim to pray five times ( Namely Namaz fajr, Namaz zuhr, Namaz Asr, Namaz Maghrib, Namaz Isha ) in a day but surprisingly in Quran the holy book of Muslims which is book which has explained things in detail (As per Q 6:114 )  does not even mentions the number of times need to pray in a day there is not even a single verse in Quran which says that a muslim is suppose to pray 5 times a day and even more surprisingly even the names of five prayers are not mentioned in Quran, By name only Three Namaz are mentioned in Quran

1-      Salat Al-Fajr (Dawn Prayer)24:58

2-       Salat Al-Isha (Night Prayer)24:58

3-       Al-Salat Al-Wusta (The Middle Prayer) 2:238.

Chapter 2 verse238  mentions the middle prayer and also says to perform the obligatory prayers but does not mentions how many times in a day you need to perform the obligatory prayers.

So The five times of Namaz is not mentioned in Quran a book which is claimed to be explained in detail and claims no contradictions in it and does not even clearly mentions the minimum number of times one needs to perform Prayer in a day which is indeed one amongst the basic pillars of Islam. It seems like the Author of Quran got so busy in expressing his hate and intolerance for Non Muslims that he forgot to mention the minimum number of times a muslim needs to pray in a day and then the Fake story of flying donkey (Al-Burq) was created to justify the concept of Five time Namaz in a day.

b). Celebrating Eid on the end of Ramadan

Unknown to many Muslims, the term ‘Eid’ has never been used by the Quran to mark the end of Ramadan or to celebrate the conclusion of the fasting period. For example, the requirements to fast in the month of Ramadan, to pay ‘zakat’ and to establish ‘salah’ are not learnt by ‘prophetic sunna’ or tradition. These are clear directives instituted by the Quran as are many other prescriptive laws and edicts. There is absolutely no ‘religious’ prescription to celebrate ‘Eid’ in the Quran

The term ‘Eid’ has only been used once in the entire Quran and possibly in the context of the Eucharist which is the Christian ceremony which commemorates the Biblical Last Supper of Prophet Jesus. According to the New Testament, the festival is celebrated by Prophet Jesus’s followers as per his instructions to remember him.

According to the Quran, Prophet Jesus in response to an initial request made by his disciples (5:112), prayed to Almighty God that He send from heaven a table spread (with food) as a festival (Eid). This festival would constitute a sign from God from the ‘first to the last of them’

In Chapter 5 verse 114 “Said Jesus the son of Mary: “O God our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread, that there may be for us  a festival (Arabic: Eid(an)) for the first and the last of us and a sign from You; and provide for our sustenance, for You are the best Sustainer (of our needs).””

But  no where in Quran (a book which is claimed to be explained in detail and claims no contradictions in it) ‘Eid’ has been used to mark the end of Ramadan or to celebrate the conclusion of the fasting period.

c). PROCEDURE FOR BURIAL OF DEAD BODIES

Now Burial of dead bodies is a very important concept in Islam Muslims believe that a person whose body has not been buried cannot enter heaven and Burial of the Dead in Islam as it is practiced today, deploys a rigid ritualized process which is performed in the name of ‘religion’. Depending on which school of thought one follows, the rituals can vary.

What is interesting to note is the fact that preparing the body in a specified manner for burial is not mentioned anywhere in the Quran . For example, the Quran states when  ‘ghusl’ (bathing) or ‘wudu’ (ablution) is required in chapter 5: verse 6 but this verse mentions no ghusl and wudu for the Dead.

There is complete silence on the matter regarding burial preparation and it is a matter left to society to prepare and bury the body in what is deems appropriate. There is no codified Quranic position with regards this. There is no right or wrong way to bury the dead, other than with respect and a matter to be performed with dignity.

d).  Circumcision

Many Muslims never question whether this ritual has any basis in scripture (i.e. the Quran).  Instead, they blindly follow the traditions of their forefathers without rational thought, evidence or analysis subjecting their new born children to a part mutilation of their genitalia. The Quran on the other hand makes no mention of circumcision.

Instead, there are verses that indicate that God has already created the human shape in a perfected form (requiring no changes such as the removal of a male’s foreskin )

Chapter 95. verse 4

Transliteration

Laqad khalaqna al-insana fee ahsanitaqweem

“We have indeed created mankind in the best of stature (moulds ) (Arabic: taqweem)

The above verses beg the following question. Why then is the male incomplete and requires his foreskin to be removed if our Lord has revealed no decree for it nor hinted at it from His words which He has revealed to us?

In fact, the only source that  can be cited by Muslim is the ‘Sunna’, a practice carried forward from Abraham. But the question still remains. Where is the proof that this indeed was a practice instituted for humanity (men) when clearly God instructed Prophet Muhammad  to follow the commandments and warn by way of the Quran only (6:19; 50:45)?

At no place in the Quran does it mention that Abraham practiced circumcision and if they bring proofs from any other book than it proves that Quran cannot be called a book which is explained in detail.

In connection with the above, the desperation to prove this practice as a religious requirement of Islam is all too evident in Muslim thought when the Bible (which is claimed by Muslims to be a corrupted book) is used to invoke proof. It is clear that many Christians themselves do not see circumcision as a fundamental requirement of their faith and worship towards God and they posit their arguments from scripture. Jewish followers do much the same to support their particular stance for the commandment of circumcision.

The Quran on the other hand makes no mention of circumcision.

CONCLUSION –

Quran which as per chapter 4 verse 82 claims to be a book from Allah because by claiming itself to be free from contradictions and in another verse Quran says that it is book explained in detail (as per verse 114 of chapter 6) and Muslims require no other book then Quran (as per verse 37 of chapter 68 and verse 50 of chapter 77) as Quran in itself is a complete book for Muslims.

Now in step three we have analyzed that the basic and most well known practices of Islam like

1 Five times Namaz daily

2Celebrating Eid on the end of Ramadan

3 Procedure for Burial of dead bodies

4 Circumcision of male gentiles

Is not even mentioned in Quran then how can we claim this book to be a book explained in detail ? Is this not a contradiction to verse 114 of chapter 6 ? Is this not a contradiction?

Muslims themselves knew that Quran is an incomplete book and to justify there practices they compiled the books of Hadees, We today see that Hadees themselves are books full of contradictions Sunni Muslim reject Shia Hadees and Shia Muslim reject Sunni Hadees and the Aihl-e-Quran (Quran Aloners) reject all the Hadees. In any of the above case whether we include Hadees or not Quran itself remains an incomplete book and no justification and mention for many of the current day practices of Islam are found in Quran.

So the above three step analysis clearly proves that Quran is not a word of God infact it is a man made book filled with errors and contradictions.

[Note – To keep the length of this article short, I have briefly discussed only four well known practices of Islam which are not mentioned in Quran there are some other things also which are not mentioned in Quran and some more contradictions in Quran which will be discussed in the next part of this series CAN QURAN BE A WORD OF GOD?]

Reply to Dr Naik’s :Does Islam Promote Violence?

Does Islam Promote Violence?

We often hear Muslim Clerics and Scholars explaining the meaning of word ‘Islam’ as peace. Most of the time we are accused of misquoting verses of Quran and misunderstanding them, we are even asked by our politically correct leader to never use the word terrorism with Islam.  But is it true that Islam doesn’t promote violence? Or it does? When I asked this simple question from my Muslim friends, they handed me a video lecture of famous Indian televangelist Dr. Zakir Naik, who explains in his video why Islam does not promote violence. Even after going through his video I am not satisfied, I am writing this article as an objection to his claims. Following are the transcripts of his lecture in red, with my reply.

Dr. Naik Said:- A few selected verses from the Qur’an are often misquoted to perpetuate the myth that Islam promotes violence, and exhorts its followers to kill those outside the pale of Islam.

My Reply:- Few years back I read a book entitled “164 Jihad verses in Quran” compiled by Yoel Natan, he enlisted only those verses from Quran which talks about killing, murder, jihad, raid, loot, expedition, fighting etc. Apart from Quran there are many Sahih Hadiths, which are canonical scripture of Islam, and in Hadith you will find commands of violence and fighting in good amount. So I guess Dr. Naik made a mistake by selecting the word ‘few’ for those verses from Quran which critics consider to promote violence.

Let’s leave the Quranic verses aside for time being, but how can we ignore what Muslims are doing today in world in name of Allah. I believe action speaks more than words, and they (Muslims) have proved it that something is wrong with Islamic teaching. They don’t even tolerate Muslims from other sect, then how come we expect them to show mercy of Non-Muslims?

About the allegation of misquotation I would say, that it’s hardly our mistake if we have misquoted any Quranic verse, as seldom you will find Quranic verses with context. Actually Quran only in some places gives its context of verses, still we are more sincere than Muslims in taking the Quranic verse in context, why I said so we will see it later in this article.

Dr. Naik Said:- . Verse from Surah Taubah

The following verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality:

“Kill the mushriqeen (pagans, polytheists, kuffar) where ever you find them.” [Al-Qur’an 9:5]

My Reply:- Yes, true the Quranic verse 9:5 and 9:29 are very often quoted, the complete verse reads:-

[9.5] So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Who will not say that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed, and brutality, after reading the above verse? The commands are crystal clear, and in above verse the author of Quran commands Muslims to kill Non-Muslims after the sacred months of Islam is passed. It further adds that if they (Non-Muslims) embrace Islam, then let them go free. Doesn’t it sound kind of dictatorship by an almighty? Well I still have to take this verse in context, or else Muslims will accuse me of misquoting the verse, but before let’s see what more Dr. Naik says.

Dr. Naik said:- . Context of verse is during battlefield

Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriks (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriks of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriks of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says:

“But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Al-Qur’an 9:5]

This verse is quoted during a battle.

My Reply:- Above Dr. Naik easily claims that the context of verse is during battlefield, but we don’t see any evidence for his claim. Whereas most of the early scholars have different view about the very same verse.

Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi wrote: – A clear declaration was made that all the treaties with the mushriks were abolished and the Muslims would be released from the treaty obligations with them after a respite of four months.(vv. 1-3). This declaration was necessary for uprooting completely the system of life based on shirk and to make Arabia exclusively the center of Islam so that it should not in any way interfere with the spirit of Islam nor become an internal danger for it.

In his explanation of the verse 9:5 Ibn Kathir says:- (So when the Sacred Months have passed…), meaning, `Upon the end of the four months during which We prohibited you from fighting the idolaters  and which is the grace period We gave them, then fight and kill the idolaters wherever you may find them.’ Allah’s statement next, (then fight the Mushrikin wherever you find them), means, on the earth in general, except for the Sacred Area,(and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush), do not wait until you find them. Rather, seek and besiege them in their areas and forts, gather intelligence about them in the various roads and fairways so that what is made wide looks ever smaller to them. This way, they will have no choice, but to die or embrace Islam.

These above explanations make the verse very clear, as it also proves that Dr. Naik is lying about the verse. This verse was revealed to prepare Muslims for Jihad against Non-Muslims, and to force all Arabs to embrace Islam.

Dr. Naik is certainly making an error by claiming that the peace treaty was violated by Non-Muslims, but in reality it is Muhammad himself who broke the treaty with Non-Muslims, it is clear from the very first verse of Quran Ch 9, which says:-

[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allah and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.

Here we see Allah and his messenger are declaring the disassociation of the treaty with the polytheists, and it is not the other way round. The reason for this disassociation is correctly mentioned by Maududdi, as he says:-

This declaration was necessary for uprooting completely the system of life based on shirk and to make Arabia exclusively the center of Islam so that it should not in any way interfere with the spirit of Islam nor become an internal danger for it.

Allah commands Muslims to complete the term of four months with them who are not deficient towards Muslims in any way. This he mentioned in Quran Ch 9 Verse 4:-

Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].

And the very next verse commands Muslims to kill even those who were not deficient towards Muslims and supported no enemy of Muslims, so this alone clearly proves that Islam does promote violence, and the explanation given by Dr. Naik is full of errors and far from historical evidences.

Dr. Naik:- Example of war between America and Vietnam

We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: “Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them”. Today if I say that the American President said, “Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them” without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.

My Reply:- Well Dr. Naik loves to brain wash his followers by giving irrelevant examples, and he cunningly quotes those example which may make Islam look a peaceful religion. The example which he quoted above is in no relation with the verse which we are discussing. As I demonstrated above that the verse was not revealed in relation of war like that of America and Vietnam, so his example is useless here.  He should have better given example of Pakistan and India. We all know Pakistan is a heaven of Islamic terrorism, so what if the president of Pakistan tells Islamic terrorists “Kill all the Indians wherever you find and lie in wait of them.” This example would be more relevant than his example.

Dr Naik Said:- Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, “Kill the Mushriks wherever you find them”, during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

My Reply:- Yes, verse 9:5 was revealed to boost the morale of Muslims, but not during battlefield. Muslims were commanded to kill all the Non-Muslims of Arabia and fight with them until they die or embrace Islam, so were Muslims in state of war with all Non-Muslim? I believe no. I as said earlier this verse was revealed to make the whole of Arabia a perfect Dar-ul-Islam.

Dr Naik said: – . Shourie jumps from verse 5 to verse 7

Arun Shourie is one of the staunchest critics of Islam in India. He quotes the same verse, Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 in his book ‘The World of Fatawas’, on page 572. After quoting verse 5 he jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realize that he has skipped verse 6.

My Reply:- Its good that he jumped from verse 5 to 7, or else it would have made the meaning of the verse 5 more worst, and cruel. OK  as you suggest that we should include verse 9:6 too, then sure, I’ll do it for you. Quran 9:6 says:-

And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

To understand this verse we may rely on what most prominent Islamic scholars think about this verse, I believe it will not make the previous verse peaceful, but certainly it will make it look more violent. Ibn Kathir in his commentary says:-

These Ayat allowed fighting people unless, and until, they embrace Islam and implement its rulings and obligations. Allah mentioned the most important aspects of Islam here, including what is less important. Surely, the highest elements of Islam after the Two Testimonials, are the prayer, which is the right of Allah, the Exalted and Ever High, then the Zakah, which benefits the poor and needy. These are the most honorable acts that creatures perform, and this is why Allah often mentions the prayer and Zakah together. In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that Ibn `Umar said that the Messenger of Allah said, These Ayat allowed fighting people unless, and until, they embrace Islam and implement its rulings and obligations.

He adds:- (And if anyone of the Mushrikin), whom you were commanded to fight and We allowed you their blood and property,’(seeks your protection), asked you for safe passage, then accept his request until he hears the Words of Allah, the Qur’an. Recite the Qur’an to him and mention a good part of the religion with which you establish Allah’s proof against him, The Ayah says, `We legislated giving such people safe passage so that they may learn about the religion of Allah, so that Allah’s call will spread among His servants. Ibn Abi Najih narrated that Mujahid said that this Ayah, “Refers to someone who comes to you to hear what you say and what was revealed to you (O Muhammad). Therefore, he is safe until he comes to you, hears Allah’s Words and then proceeds to the safe area where he came from.”

After reading the above explanation, in short we can say that Muslims in 9:5 are allowed to kill all Non-Muslims until they make Arabia a perfect Dar-ul-Islam. Muslims are allowed to fight until none has right to worship Allah alone. In between if any Non-Muslim seeks protection, i.e. if he agrees to embrace Islam, and do all that what Muslims do, is safe.

Now how this addition of verse 9:6 makes its previous verse peaceful? Still the outline is same, to kill Non-Muslims and keep fighting until they either die or embrace Islam. So in Dr. Naik’s words, any sensible person will realize that Islam does not promote violence.

Rest he talks about Quran 9:6, which I have already explained in above part. So by no means Islam can be said a religion of peace, and even the top scholars of Islam makes a number of mistakes and errors while trying to prove Islam to be religion of peace. Islam was, is and ever be the most intolerant religion, which always promotes violence.

Is Earth Egg Shaped as Per Qur’an?

Islamic scholars and apologists claim, “The Noble Quran is filled with scientific statements and notions.  These are statements of Allah Almighty describing how He created things on earth and in the Universe.  What’s most amazing is that all of these scientific statements and notions had been proven to be in perfect agreement with science and our modern-day scientific discoveries.  Allah Almighty made the Noble Quran be Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Everlasting Divine Miracle and proof for Prophethood.  The Holy Book certainly stood the test of time 1,500 years ago with Its Claims, Prophecies and Miraculous language eloquence, and it does again and again in our day today with Its overwhelming agreement with science and discoveries that were not known to man 1,500 years ago.” [Source]

Earth is Egg Shaped as per Notable Islamic scholars like Zakir Naik

Earth is Egg Shaped as per Notable Islamic scholars like Zakir Naik

Let’s analyse this claim, in light of Lexicon Arabic Dictionaries, and narrations of Muhammad. I’ll start with quoting the verse, which claims earth to be egg shaped in Qur’an. See Qur’an Ch 79, Verse 30, which reads:-

Transliteration

Wal-arda baAAda thalikadahaha

Sahih International
And after that He spread the earth.

I don’t know why Sahih International translates the word ‘Dahaha’ as Spread out here. They must have misunderstood the word, so we can rely on other Muslim Translators of Qur’an. Almost all other translation by Islamic scholars are as follows:

Muhsin Khan
And after that He spread the earth;
Pickthall
And after that He spread the earth,
Yusuf Ali
And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);
Shakir
And the earth, He expanded it after that.
Dr. Ghali
And the earth, after that He flattened it (for life).

This is really amazing, why not a single Scholar translates the word as Egg Shaped or Spherical etc. But yes, we do have scholars like Dr. Zakir Naik, and Bassam Zawadi who do translates the word ‘Dahaha’ as egg shaped. Now, to know whether their claim is true or not, we have to rely on Qur’anic dictionaries and Lexicon Arabic Dictionaries. Lets see how Lane Lexicon dictionary explains this word Dahaha. See the explanation below:-

Daha (., MM_b;,, 1,) first pers. Dahouth aor, yad’hoo inf. N. dahoo He spread; spread out, or forth; expanded; or extended; (S, Msb, K; ) a thing; (K; ) and, when said of God, the earth; (Fr, S, Mb, 1V; ) As also daha first pers. dahaithu (K in art. daha) aor. yaad’heae inf. n. dahae: (Msb, and K in art. dahae : ) or He (God) made the earth wide, or ample; as explained by an Arab woman of the desert to Sh: (TA : ) also, said of an ostrich, (S, TA,) he expanded, and made wide, (TA,) with his foot, or leg, the place where he was about to deposit his eggs: (S, TA : ) and, said of a man, he spread, &c., and made plain, even, or smooth. (TA in art. dhaha) [Source]

So, it is not egg as Few Islamic apologists claim, it is the place which Ostriches expand or stretch to lay eggs.  Daha does not mean eggs of Ostrich, but yes it is the laying place of the egg. Other meanings as per this above quote is, He spread out, or forth, or Expanded etc. None of these meanings resemble to the shape of Earth. Another dictionary which is quoted by Answering-Christianity team, to prove the word ‘Daha’ mean ‘Egg Shaped’body is Lisan Al Arab. Let’s also see what this dictionary says.

English Translation:- Translation: Al-udhy, Al-idhy, Al-udhiyya, Al-idhiyya, Al-udhuwwa:The place in sand where an ostrich lays its egg. That’s because the ostrich spreads out the earth with its feet then lays its eggs there, an ostrich doesn’t have a nest.

The above definition, again support my claim. It proves that Daha is the place on Earth, where Ostriches lays egg. Now, we will see another dictionary. It is Wehr-Coman Dictionary, pg 273 . It says:-

Daha-  To spread out, flatten, Level,  unroll. Here is the proof.

Daha

I think it must be clear by now that this claim is a hoax by Islamic scholars to fool people, all the Arabic dictionaries translates the word ‘Dahaha’ referring to a flat surface. Even if we accept that the word ‘Dahaha’ means ‘Egg Shaped’ or ‘Ostrich Egg’, then see how drastically the meaning of the complete verse changes:

The verse in Arabic says: Wal-arda baAAda thalikadahaha (Let us break this verse, and read it word-to-word with its meaning)

wal-arḍa – And the Earth

baʿda – after

dhālika – that

daḥāhā – Egg Shaped (Ostrich Egg)

Does this verse make any sense? If yes, then keep believing that Earth is Egg shaped as per Quran, because we can only show some open minded, and rational people the truth. It is not for those who are brain washed by Zakir Naik.
